雷诺/日产拟在印度制造超低成本汽车
Ghosn vows that Indian car will be cheaper to make than Tata's

Carlos Ghosn, chief executive of Renault and Nissan, yesterday pledged that a car the group is planning to make with an Indian partner would be cheaper to produce than the Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car.

雷诺(Renault)和日产(Nissan)的首席执行官卡洛斯•戈恩(Carlos Ghosn)昨日承诺该集团与印度合作伙伴正计划生产的一款汽车,将比目前全球最廉价的汽车——塔塔(Tata)的Nano——成本更低。

Mr Ghosn said the “ultra low-cost car”, which will be designed and built by Renault and Nissan's Indian partner, Bajaj Auto, would also trump the Nano and any other car in the market on fuel efficiency. It will be launched in 2012.

戈恩表示,这款将由雷诺/日产的印度合作伙伴巴贾吉汽车公司(Bajaj Auto)设计并生产的“超低成本汽车”,还将在能效方面胜过Nano和市场上其它任何一款汽车。这款汽车将于2012年推出。

“The cost of this car will be lower than any other car made today in India,” Mr Ghosn said at the World Economic Forum meeting in New Delhi.

“这款汽车的成本将低于目前印度制造的任何汽车,”戈恩在新德里的世界经济论坛(World Economic Forum)会议上表示。

The announcement will stoke competition between global carmakers for the bottom end of the rapidly growing Indian market, which Mr Ghosn predicted would increase from 2m cars a year to 6m in the next decade.

这个消息将会加剧全球汽车制造商对迅速增长的印度低端市场的竞争。戈恩预计,未来10年,这个市场的规模将从每年销售200万辆汽车增加到600万辆。

Tata raised the barrier to entry this year with its release of the Nano, whose starting price is about Rs100,000 ($2,150). It is the first car cheap enough to challenge India's burgeoning motorcycle market.

But the Nano's initial production run was fewer than 100,000 units after Tata had to abandon a factory in West Bengal state following protests from farmers.

This gave a reprieve to rivals, such as Renault and Bajaj, which started talks on their ultra low-cost car two years ago. They had initially discussed a car that would be priced between $2,500 and $3,000.

Mr Ghosn would not be drawn on the eventual price of the Bajaj car but pledged that it would be the cheapest car to make.

Renault and Nissan would provide technical support to Bajaj while it was designing and producing the car, he said.
